Cyber Security – what do you need to know?

Cyber security

With the Queen officially opening The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in London today, it’s a timely reminder that cyber security is fast moving up the national agenda and should also now be a top priority of any smart thinking business.

This new centre will be at the front line in protecting the UK against cyber-attacks and forms part of the GCHQ intelligence agency. Officials had previously called for a “sustained effort from government and the private sector to work together to make the UK the hardest possible target” and this is part of a five-year National Cyber Security Strategy announced in November last year.

So it’s a good time for every business to review how cyber resilient they actually are. Statistics suggest that most organisations will fall victim to an attack sooner rather than later – according to a PwC/HM Government survey in 2015, a staggering 90% of large organisations and 74% of small businesses had suffered a security breach. With such incidents on the rise, businesses are facing a near certainty and need to take steps to manage the risk accordingly. If you’re still inclined to dismiss the reports as scaremongering, consider this – once the General Data Protection Regulation comes into force next year, information risk assessment will become as important as Health & Safety risk assessments.

If you’re looking for a place to start, why not register for our one day intensive training course on Cyber and Information Security? It’s a non-technical course designed to equip businesses with the knowledge and steps they need to take to protect themselves against breaches and attacks.
